Something that is so incredibly essential and valuable to our overall health and happiness is taking care of ourselves. It’s also something that is often overlooked and under-practiced, which is why finding ways to practice self-care is extremely important.
We sometimes tend to dismiss our own needs in order to fulfill others’ needs and don’t always even realize it until we begin to experience the negative side-effects. Of course it’s important and necessary to take care of the ones around us but it’s also important and necessary that we take care of ourselves as well.
Self-care is a necessity and fortunately there are many different ideas and ways that can be practiced to ensure we’re taking the best possible care of ourselves.
Self Care Ideas & Their Benefits
create a good sleep schedule
Sleep is very important to our overall well-being. Which is why having a good, consistent sleep schedule is also important. If you’re only sleeping 5 hours on average a night, sure you’re getting some sleep, but probably not enough. Getting a good, well-rested 7-8 hour sleep is going to improve your overall brain health including your mood, patience and attention span. It’s going to give more clarity to your mind and increase your motivation and productivity levels as well. If you’ve ever found yourself lacking sleep, feeling irritable, easily distracted and lazy are probably some familiar emotions to you. That’s why getting a proper sleep is important and overall it’s just going to make you feel good.
Eat well and enough
Eating properly means you’re eating nutritious ingredients and enough to make your body feel satisfied. If you’re eating unhealthily and inconsistently throughout the day, you can almost guarantee that you’re not going to be feeling your best physically or mentally. This is because food is our body’s fuel. Eating fruits and vegetables delivers our bodies with essential minerals, vitamins and fiber needed to keep us healthy, active and happy.
exercise
Sometimes just getting your body moving can make you feel amazing. Whether it’s doing your favourite workout session, yoga flow or going for a nice walk in nature, they are all rewarding ways to better our health. Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin which are two naturally produced chemicals in our body that improve our well-being in many ways.
Pamper Yourself
Take a nice, long & relaxing epsom salt bath. Throw on a face mask. Moisturize with your favourite body lotion. Refresh & paint your nails. Doing little pampering gestures like these are beneficial because you’re taking the time to focus on yourself and relax your mind & body.
Read
Pulling out a good read is sure to bring your mind to a different place for a while. Sometimes just being in a quiet place, with some nice-lit candles, a cozy blanket and a good book is the self-care practice we need. Personal Development books are a great choice to help create good habits and boost your mood all while enjoying a good book.
journal
Some people are writers. We just tend to feel better when we have it all spilled out onto paper. Journaling is a great self-care practice to adapt because it lets your mind pour out whatever is on it and spill it onto the pages. No filter, and no concerns for if it even makes complete sense. Just pure authenticity and realness. It can be very therapeutic and can leave your mind feeling clearer and more at ease.
Watch your favourite show or movie
I personally love throwing on some comfy clothes and relaxing on the couch with a peppermint tea, watching my favourite shows (Grey’s Anatomy , One Tree Hill or a reality show mainly). It’s a great way to simply relax and unwind.
Phone & Social Media Detox
Sometimes we can catch ourselves paying a little too much attention to the outside world, and not enough to our own. Putting that phone down and staying away from social media for a bit can help us focus on more important things, like our health and those around us. Decide on times when you can put the phone down. Maybe it’s when you’re eating dinner, watching a movie with loved ones or even an hour before and after sleep. Whenever it is, try your best to make it a habit to put the phone aside for a bit.
Focus On Your Tasks
We sometimes tend to focus a lot of our attention on others and we don’t always get to accomplish what’s on our own lists. When we don’t get to our lists, and we’re constantly pushing it back, it can leave us feeling in a bit of a slump mood. Taking the time to complete our own tasks and things to do will create space and time for others as well as give yourself a feeling of ease and accomplishment.
Self-care is important. You are important. Take the time necessary in your day to show yourself the love. Make it a habit, make it your duty to take care and to love yourself immensely. You’re the main one who will know how to do it best.
