Emotional wellness is one of 8 dimensions of wellness and is essentially how one is able to handle their feelings and emotions as well as how they handle the experiences and challenges of life. It’s becoming aware, understanding and accepting of your feelings while finding ways that work for you in order to deal with them. Tending to your emotional wellness is very essential to your overall health and wellbeing. Taking care of your emotional wellness will contribute to a very fulfilling and happy life.
How does emotional wellness affect your life?
When your emotional wellness isn’t in a positive state, it can affect many aspects of your life including your relationships, your school/work, productivity levels and your overall mental health. Let’s dive into that a little more.
Relationships
When we interact with others, we are opening up the doors to many different opinions and beliefs possibly outside of our own. Maintaining a healthy emotional wellness can allow you to accept that other opinions are out there, disagreements are okay to come by and you will be able to understand and accept these different opinions better. Dealing with your own emotions helps you deal with situations with others better and in a more accepting and understanding way. Having a good emotional wellness can help you connect and relate to others and give more support and care towards the people you love.
Work and school
I think it’s safe to say that when you feel like your mind is in a good place when you’re at work or studying for school, you’re able to focus and overall do better at the task at hand. Learning how to deal with your emotions can help you remain calm, professional and deal with the challenges that you may face in a better way. Your emotional wellness is vital to success both professionally and personally.
Productivity and motivation
If your emotions are a little all over the place, it’s a guarantee that your productivity and motivation can be affected. Pushing core problems in the back of our brains instead of focusing on them and handling them better are bound to pop back up. And let’s be honest, it’s exhausting. And when we’re exhausted and have things we need to do, it’s more likely we’ll choose a day on the couch rather than getting the things we need to do done. Increase your productivity and motivation through taking care of your emotional wellbeing and tending to your emotions.
Mental Health
It’s no surprise that your emotional wellness goes hand-in-hand with your mental health. That’s because when you tend to your emotional wellness, you will likely have more success at navigating your mental health through being in tune with your feelings and noticing what your body needs in that moment in order to feel better. Tending to your emotional wellness will go a long way on your journey of bettering your mental health.
